Adaptation to ongoing climate change is considered a policy priority for agriculture. The survey, by Brenda B. Lin of the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, documents multiple instances of farmers protecting economically important crops, such as rice and other cereals, alfalfa, and coffee, from outbreaks of pests and disease, often associated with climate change, or simply from changed physical conditions. The farmers succeeded by switching from growing a single variety of crop to growing a broader range of species or varieties, either at the same time or in rotation, or by introducing structural variety into uniform fields.

Ineffective Educational System Responsible For Increasing US Wage Inequality
From "The Wage Premium Puzzle and the Quality of Human Capital" by Milton H. Marquis, Florida State University, Bharat Trehan, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and Wuttipan Tantivong, Department of Labor, Thailand, February 2011, Working Paper 2011-06:
The wage premium in the United States, which can be defined as the ratio of the wages paid to high-skilled workers relative to wages paid to low-skilled workers, underwent dramatic changes during the 1980s....using two separate data sources: the CPS May/ORG and the State of Working America....the data can be be broken down into three separate periods, characterized as low, transition, and high....data sources suggest a low wage premium period from 1973 to 1980, with the 90-10 wage premium approximately equal to 3.45 and 3.62 respectively. The next few years can be regarded as a transition period. The CPS May/ORG suggests this period extended from 1981 to 1985 while the State of Working America suggests it extended from 1981 to 1988, with the average 90-10 wage premium equal to 3.98 and 4.08, respectively. For the high wage premium period, CPS May/ORG indicates a period from 1986 to 2005 and State of America from 1989 to 2005, with the average 90-10 wage premium equal to 4.36 and 4.35, respectively. The complete research paper is available here.*** ...relatively small changes in the skill distribution can have large effects on the wage premia. Such factors could include immigration, population growth, or deficiencies in the educational system in failing to provide job-relevant training.[emphasis added]

Will The Rise In Oil Prices Lead The US Into Another Recession?
From "Oil Prices and Recessions, 40 Years’ Worth" by John Keefe:
Higher oil prices have in the past led the developed economies into recessions...
There’s been an oil spike before every recession. The wiggly line [in the above chart] is the two-year percent change in oil prices. [The shaded blue areas are recessions.]*** ...note that the doubling [of oil prices] in 2005 didn’t get an immediate recessionary response — but higher gasoline prices will reduce the income people have to spend, and dent whatever recovery is going on in the consumer sector.
Simple Food: Pasta Aglio e Olio
This is off topic, I realize... but I just have to say that pasta aglio e olio - pasta with garlic and olive oil - is one of the best dishes ever invented. Last night I found myself cooking it, and then eating it, while ruminating on the way that simple dishes can be so profoundly satisfying in a way that complex and elaborate meals often aren't.
Part of the exquisite beauty of such simple, classic dishes is that they leave no room for the cook to hide mistakes. For example, pasta aglio e olio has just seven ingredients: pasta, garlic, olive oil, grated parmesean cheese, chopped parsley, salt, and chili peppers. As a result, there's a type of purity to it; each flavor maintains its own identity and is strong, distinct, and with an irreplaceable role to play. The dish would be diminshed if any of those seven ingredients were missing, or prepared incorrectly. It requires a deft touch to sauté the garlic just right, for example. Overcook the garlic and the dish becomes bitter. Undercook it and the garlic will overpower everything else. But get it just right, and it creates a magical, savory oil that clings to each strand of pasta. The chili is necessary to give the dish some punch and sharpness. The parsley is crucial to freshen and enliven it. Coarse salt provides a bit of texture as well as being absolutely essential to bring out the flavors of the other ingredients. And the cheese rounds it out and helps to bind the flavors together. When correctly prepared, in each bite you can taste each of the seven ingredients. Perfection.
And then of course, one has to recognize that it's simply a beautiful dish, as well...

Shaping Future and Building Nation: Teaching Jobs
By Swati Kapoor
Teaching jobs offer immense scope for those who have the inclination to guide and nurture talent. Higher education in India has lot of jobs like lecturers, assistant, associate professors etc. To start a career in University or college, a post graduate degree in subject of one's choice is the minimum requirement. After completing Masters, one needs to clear the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by University Grants Commission (UGC). NET is a combined exam and after qualifying it individuals can either apply for college teaching or become research scholars
by pursuing Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Research scholars can complete their PhD and become eligible for the post of Professors while those who go for college teaching start as lecturers or assistant professors and can go on to become associate professors. College and University teachers earn handsome salaries and after inclusion of the recommendations of the Chadha Committee by UGC in the Sixth Pay Commission, the salaries are now at par with top executive
Teaching is a noble profession. Teachers mould the future of the youth and contribute in building the nation. It is one of the oldest and secure professions that attract a good number of talented people in its fold. The demand for teachers has seen an upward swing as number of government and private educational institutes are increasing day by day. With Education becoming a fundamental right, the profession has becoming more challenging
At the lower level, teaching in schools is also an option with good salary. With numerous schools vying for the best faculty, there are a lot of teaching jobs today. A graduate or post graduate degree in any subject with B Ed from recognised institute is the basic qualification for a teacher. Nowadays, some Universities also offer a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education after which one can get job as a primary teacher or a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education to become Physical Instructors. As schools become more inclusive, special education are also gaining popularity. They help in adapting curriculum and developing teaching techniques to meet the needs of students. Special Education teachers have to pursue specific course for handling special students while those having a background in Psychology or Social Work can take up counselling in schools as a full time or part time job. At the pre-school level, the demand for nursery teachers is also felt badly. Nursery Teachers Training (NTT) is the qualification required for pre-school teachers. Overall, the job of teachers is very important as they inculcate good qualities and show young minds the right path. The job is challenging but satisfactory with immense growth avenues.

TEACHING JOBS OVERSEAS
by Forrest Broman
Teachers and Administrators for Overseas Positions in Short Supply
With the overall growth and expansion of American overseas and international schools throughout the world, the need for qualified overseas teachers and administrators has put serious pressures on recruiters. For example, last June the number of schools seeking to fill overseas teaching positions nearly doubled, as measured by those advertising in TIE's June issue.
Many believe that lack of a sufficient supply of teachers and administrators for overseas vacancies stems from the severely limited knowledge the average US or Canadian teacher has about the overseas teaching experience. For example a recent survey made in a suburban school in Massachusetts revealed that only 1 out of 95 teachers knew anything at all about the international network of overseas schools.
Even less is known about the tremendous financial and professional opportunities in overseas teaching or administration. For example, most overseas teachers will receive a salary and benefits that allows them to save from $5,000 to $45,000 annually, depending on location and cost of living. For, except in Western Europe, overseas teaching jobs offer tax-free salaries and housing benefits that make significant savings a certain reality. The Far East tends to offer the highest salaries, approaching $100,000 in Japan; followed by the Middle East.
Overseas teaching jobs offer far more professionally, including small classes (well under 25), strong staff development opportunities, and very talented overseas teachers as colleagues and friends. And, overseas administrative opportunities abound for those seeking leadership experiences. Many overseas administrative positions are filled internally; and the 10% to 25% turnover rate experienced by many schools guarantees that new overseas jobs in supervision will be available.
Many of those teaching abroad get hooked on the experience and stay in one school for 3-5 years then move into another exciting overseas teaching or administrative position. But those who return after their first international assignment find they have been tremendously enriched by the experience. For those with school aged children, all of whom have tuition-free enrollment, the educational benefit is incomparable. These children gain maturity, knowledge and a marked broadening of perspective from their experience abroad, in schools where learning is paramount and individuality is respected and developed.
So what is keeping the hordes of teachers dissatisfied with their current situations from applying for the thousands of overseas teaching vacancies available every year? Probably just a lack of knowledge and understanding of what great international opportunities are out there.
TIE (The International Educator) is committed to vastly increasing the knowledge of US and Canadian teachers about these rich and rewarding overseas teaching opportunities. Tune in now and we'll look for you next year in Tokyo? Singapore? Hong Kong? Madrid? Lima? Cairo? Wherever!

Leadreship Qualities
By: Haseeb Raza
A leadre is the person who works at front at directs to proceed any group, organisation,Government, orany institute.nations who Got good leaders fotunatenaly are leading the whole world now a days. When we think of leader and leadership, a brainstorming idea comes to mind that a person who lead or command a group, organization or the country & leadership is position or duties of leader which he perform. But question arises from where these leaders come and who are these people. Leadership is about influencing the people to follow you towards achieving a certain goal. The influencing skill is the major factor, which helps align people with the vision of the leader. This influence may be a natural phenomenon based on the leader’s personality and character, charisma and competence,
or an unnatural phenomenon based on position, rank and authority.
‘Trust’ is the basic requirement for influencing people to follow you. Trust is never built on what you say but on what you do and what you are. Thus a noticeable personality is definitely an attraction for followers, but a character based on ethical and moral standing is what inspires people to follow you and develop deep-rooted devotion and passion for the vision of the leader.
Whether it is the American president or president of a top multinational, leadership is not a borrowed, snatched and manipulated position. It is an earned virtue not dependent on legal power. All top leaders, who have survived the test of time, have proven themselves to be men of character and principles, they led the people from the front; they have been the first ones to face the impact in times of crisis, and most of them have displayed humility of action and deed. The last quality is perhaps the rarest to find in today’s leaders. Most leaders in today’s world are full of themselves displaying arrogance and suffering from a myopic vision.
Leadership plays a crucial role in the development of organizations and countries; they create vision, passion and integrity that become example for many others to follow. If leadership is not based on merit, character and competence, leaders are always going to be insecure, always hiding behind fancy words and forever seeking safe place in position and rank. Their insecurities make them seek and select people who are a inferior in their intellect. These chosen people in turn select people who are two notches below them and thus a culture of incompetence and insecurity is built up. Such leaders are responsible for creating classic corporate fools. The desire to accumulate power comes from their own insecurity and inward fears that without power they may not have a chance of surviving in the long run. The men around them sensing their insecurity constantly feed their egos till it makes them insensitive to their surroundings.
Pakistani politics has become a case study of this category. Aside from the Quaid-i-Azam, there has not been a single leader in the country who could inspire trust, love and respect in the masses; they all come with big claims of creating a historic revolution and leave with identical bitter end to their tenures.
The difference between the progress of India and Pakistan is also the difference between leadership styles. While on merit Dr Manmohan Singh is perhaps the most educated, well-read and experienced leader of modern times with proven competence in initiating the turnaround in Indian economy when he was finance minister, his humility is apparent from the simple dress, but when it comes to the national interests no super power can make him budge from his position.
But change does not necessarily have to be initiated from the top. It is always a few committed people at the bottom whose vision, passion and integrity become an example for many others to follow, and soon these few people turn their drive into a movement, which creates enough pressure to bring a change at the top. What we need is a bottom-up approach where it is the moral duty of all people who have intellectual and moral integrity to take the responsibility and set examples of personal sacrifice, which restore moral and ethical balance of society.

Latest job trend in New York City
As a result of recent study conducted it is found that there has been a dramatic shift from the traditional print media to the social and online media in New York City. This trend has also affected the traditional marketing professionals as well. Most New York City recruiters are now finding that there is a great need for online marketing professionals and have thus set up special plans and strategies to meet the requirement. For graduates rather fresh graduates it has become easy to shift to online media rather than print media.
Fresh graduates in the city and would like to make marketing as their career should know that online marketing is not simple due to various reasons in the online media such as blogging and writing SEO pages. Thus to get success in online marketing, a fresh job applicant should be familiar with blogging, Twitter and how to formulate SEO pages. In addition great writing skills are also required as the ability to write interesting articles which will draw the attention of the potential consumers and customers is highly essential. Companies such as Enigin Marketing have made great use of these techniques to advance their marketing in the online marketplace.
The online marketing is slowly replacing the earlier system of cold calling. This requires that clients come to you instead of the earlier formula of making calls to the clients. For doing this it is necessary to rank your website on the front pages of Google, Yahoo and other important search engines, which are used by the potential clients who are searching for some particular keywords. Though it may sound easy, it is, in fact not so. Earlier, writing an article full of keywords was thought to be sufficient. But due to the changing trends, it is no longer the key to online success because to make a website that is friendly to Google and Yahoo is not an easy task any more.
Thus those job seekers of New York City who have the stamina to compete in this complex game and have interest and ability to use Twitter, blog, put up consistent updates to all the pages of a website, anchor links, write interesting articles in addition to having patience, perseverance and the drive to beat the competitors in the game of online marketing should know that they are in a better position and can hope to land a job with better wages and opportunities than those who are lagging in these qualities.

The Ignored Early Warning Of 9/11: 18 Year Anniversary Of The First Terrorist Attempt To Destroy The World Trade Center
From The New York Times, February 26, 1993 article about the first terrorist attempt to take down the World Trade Center with a blast that knocked out the police command and evacuation center and was felt a mile away:
The police said the blast killed at least five people and left more than 650 others injured, mostly with smoke inhalation or minor burns, but dozens with cuts, bruises, broken bones or serious burns. The police said 476 were treated at hospitals and the rest by rescue and medical crews at the scene.Read the compltete NY Times article of that event here.
The explosion also trapped hundreds of people in debris or in smoke-filled stairwells and elevators of the towers overhead and forced the evacuation of more than 50,000 workers from a trade center bereft of power for lights and elevators for seven hours.
No Bomb Fragments Found
The blast, which was felt throughout the Wall Street area and a mile away on Ellis and Liberty Islands in New York Harbor, also knocked out the police command and operations centers for the towers, which officials said rendered the office complex's evacuation plans useless.
With hindsight, you have to wonder if President Clinton's response to the event was adequate.

How to Find Document Translation Jobs
By Jeremy Winters
Finding document translation jobs is not as difficult as it may seem. There are sites that cater to those who need and give exactly that service. The sites offer a place where those in need of a translator can put up an article telling what they need done, what time frame, what languages and details like this. Those who are qualified can log in and pick what they want to do.
Document translation jobs cover a large variety of areas. Martial arts certificates are one kind of document translation job to do. Those who train under someone who only writes in a certain language but would like to have it in their native language have put up the request for this service. Instruction manuals are another area that this type of service is needed in.
Some of the products that are bought online from dealers overseas include manuals that only come in that language. In this case it is important that the purchaser has the proper readable instructions with which to put the product together or learn to use it. Wedding documents are another one. It is romantic to get married in a tropical place like Taiwan or Brazil. Sometimes a union like this will be in the husband's or wife's language and the partner would like it to be something they can show off to their family as well.
Real estate ventures in other countries happen every day. For foreigners that purchase property in the United States having a contract they can read is ideal. Not everyone here who sells or rents their property can offer a document in the other party's language. Document translation jobs in the real estate area are vitally important. In order to make sure the contract is not voidable there must be a 100% understanding involved. For this reason this would be one career that would allow a person to make a good living and always have job security.
When searching for translation jobs, agencies are sometimes very helpful. They take in requests for the service and then categorize them to suit the needs of customers. Language combo is one area that is specified which would involve jobs like translating French to English or Puerto Rican to Russian. The specialty of the translator is another category that is on their lists. Country of origin is also important for certain documents that are in need of translation.
Another area of translation is for college students who have research to do but some of the papers they need to read are in another language. In a case like this a translator will be needed and in a hurry. All of the jobs that they do are important to someone. With a global economy the norm of our modern society, this is one area of work that will always be there.

Searching Jobs In Today's Economy
By Joseph Stutzman
In today's difficult economy, job seekers are looking for more effective ways of finding jobs and getting the work they need. The traditional methods of sending out resumes and cover letters or responding to classified ads can be expensive and time consuming. They can also have a very inefficient rate of return on time and money.
With a little research and creative thinking, finding a job today can be less frustrating, much less expensive and more rewarding. Online resources make the job hunting process today much different from what it was even ten years ago. Searching for a new job online is usually free, requires no investment in gas, babysitting or postage and it's possible to reach and reply to many more prospective employers than it would be in person. Additionally,
conducting a job search online allows people to look for the perfect position around the corner or across the country.
There are many online resources for finding jobs that don't require any sign-up fees or membership costs. Large databases such as Yahoo Jobs, Monster and the like allow job hunters to search for jobs in various industries and based on their experience, skills and interests. New jobs are added frequently and users can also find good information on the companies that are posting employment positions. One downside is that there is a great deal of traffic on these sites, so the competition for some positions can be stiff.
Craigslist is another great online resource. There's a Craigslist for most locations and depending on the town searched, there is often less competition than with the larger databases. Most Craigslist sites are quite active, so new jobs may be posted daily. Craigslist is also an excellent source for telecommuting jobs, which might be a good alternative for some. It is important, though, to be careful of scams and "business opportunities" on Craigslist.
Forums and websites related to work in specific fields and industries may be another great resource. A quick Google search can turn up forums, groups and Facebook pages in any field. These types of sites are the new "word of mouth" in the digital age. Job openings are often posted or discussed and can lead to opportunities that have not been advertised elsewhere. That means less competition, too. Just be careful not to get caught up in web browsing rather than serious job hunting.
Finding jobs with specific companies is also made easy online. A visit to any company website will usually lead to the company's employment opportunities and application submission wizards. Job hunters can apply to dozens of companies online in far less time than by mail or in person. Today's economy may be difficult, but today's digital culture makes finding a job much easier.

Looking Bad in the UK
As I explained last week, I'm starting to feel cautiously optimistic about the US economy in 2011. I wish I could say the same about the UK.
First, we learned this morning that the recent (and probably ongoing) contraction in the UK's economy was a bit deeper than initially revealed. It appears that the British economy was actually contracting at a 2.5% annual rate at the end of 2010:
And then, as if to kick the British economy while it's down, we learned this week that sentiment on the Monetary Policy Committee ("MPC") of the Bank of England is trending toward higher interest rates, not lower:
Alas, I take this as evidence that economists and policy-makers in the UK have forgotten as much about how the macroeconomy works as they have in the US. A Dark Age of Macroeconomics has descended upon both sides of the Atlantic.
First, we learned this morning that the recent (and probably ongoing) contraction in the UK's economy was a bit deeper than initially revealed. It appears that the British economy was actually contracting at a 2.5% annual rate at the end of 2010:
GDP GrowthThe fact that a significant reason for the slowdown in economic activity in Britain at the end of last year was the result of a reduction in spending by businesses tells me that companies are deeply worried about the economy in 2011. Based on some conversations that I've had with upper management in a couple of UK companies, as well as plain old common sense, I feel quite certain that this pull-back in spending by businesses is primarily a reaction to the "austerity measures" that the UK's government is implementing. There is a widespread and reasonable concern among businesses that this year's substantial tax increases and cuts in government spending will make a serious dent in the recovery. After all, thanks to the austerity measures, economic forecasts for the UK for 2011 have been revised down in recent months. So naturally, businesses are pulling back on their spending, waiting to see how strong demand for their goods and services really is this year.
Contracts by 0.6% in Q4 2010
Gross domestic product contracted by 0.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2010, revised down from the previously estimated fall of 0.5 per cent. GDP in the fourth quarter of 2010 is now 1.5 per cent higher than the fourth quarter of 2009.
...Output in the service industries was revised down to a fall of 0.7 per cent in the latest quarter from a fall of 0.5 per cent reported in the preliminary estimate. The decline this quarter was driven by a fall in business services of 1.1 per cent, together with a fall of 1.4 per cent in transport, storage and communications services.
Household expenditure fell 0.1 per cent following a rise of 0.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2010.
And then, as if to kick the British economy while it's down, we learned this week that sentiment on the Monetary Policy Committee ("MPC") of the Bank of England is trending toward higher interest rates, not lower:
More MPC members vote for a rate hikeI must confess that I am truly mystified by this. Yes, inflation in the UK has risen in recent months. But this is almost completely explained by two very temporary factors: the recent spike in commodity prices (led by the price of oil), and the increase in the VAT in Britain, which feeds through to higher prices for nearly all types of consumer goods. Absent these temporary forces, it seems clear (even to the Bank of England's governor Mervyn King) that underlying inflation in the UK is not a problem.
UK interest rates could rise soon following news that the number of policymakers in favour of a hike increased during the last Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.
Minutes published by the bank show member Spencer Dale joined Andrew Sentance, who has long been voting for a hike, and Martin Weale in pushing for an increase.
While six MPC members voted to keep rates frozen at 0.5 per cent, the three thought it was time to change them, with Mr Sentance preferring a 0.5 per cent hike for the first time, having previously advocated a 0.25 per cent increase.
Alas, I take this as evidence that economists and policy-makers in the UK have forgotten as much about how the macroeconomy works as they have in the US. A Dark Age of Macroeconomics has descended upon both sides of the Atlantic.

Wisconsin Teachers' Fringe Benefits Per Dollar Salary Are 3 Times The Private Sector Rate
From The Wall Street Journal, "Oh, To Be a Teacher in Wisconsin: How can fringe benefits cost nearly as much as a worker's salary? Answer: collective bargaining." by Robert M. Costrell.
The showdown in Wisconsin over fringe benefits for public employees boils down to one number: 74.2. That's how many cents the public pays Milwaukee public-school teachers and other employees for retirement and health benefits for every dollar they receive in salary. The corresponding rate for employees of private firms is 24.3 cents.Read the complete article here.
Solar Energy Facing Same Environmental Lawsuits As Non-Renewable Energy
From "Solar Energy Faces Tests On Greenness" by Todd Woody in The New York Times:
Just weeks after regulators approved the last of nine multibillion-dollar solar thermal power plants to be built in the Southern California desert, a storm of lawsuits and the resurgence of an older solar technology are clouding the future of the nascent industry.Read the complete article here.
A Plateau in Wall Street Compensation?
Have we finally reached the limit of the compensation taken by employees on Wall Street? On the one hand, this report was just released today:
However, it's one thing for people in Washington and other talking heads to complain about the ridiculous compensation taken by many Wall Street employees. But it's another thing altogether if stock market investors are shying away from investment banks because they see them as insufficiently profitable. Because if that's the case, then there may be (for the first time that I can think of) some serious market pressure to limit Wall Street compensation packages. And if we have indeed finally reached a plateau in the size of the financial sector in the US economy, I see that as a very good thing.
The 2010 Wall Street bonus: $128,530On the other hand, judging by the stock price of some investment banks, investors are having serious doubts about whether those investment banks are earning enough money to be worth investing in:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wall Street workers may be feeling a little leaner since cash bonuses fell nearly 8% last year, according to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
But bonuses still averaged more than $120,000. And that doesn't take into account salaries or commissions, which can significantly bump up workers' total compensation packages.
Total bonuses paid to New York City workers in the financial securities industry fell to $20.8 billion in 2010. That's a one-third drop from 2007, before the financial crisis, DiNapoli said.
The Big SqueezeThere has been a tremendous shift over the past 25 years or so in the portion of the US economy's resources that have been ending up in the pockets of people who work in the financial industry. Many observers (including me) thought that the secular trend of more and more resources being devoted toward finance (and all of the explicit and unadulterated rent-seeking behavior that much of the financial industry depends on) was going to come to an end with the financial crisis of 2008. But over the last year, that outcome has seemed unclear to me. Actually, I guess it still seems unclear to me.
Can investment banks make high enough returns on equity to exist?
FOR financiers, closing an investment bank is like parting with a Porsche: life is too dull without it. Yet a cull is needed. Most bulge-bracket firms made billions of dollars of profits in 2010, but not enough to compensate shareholders for the far larger amounts of capital they now have invested.
...[I]nvestors are disappointed by the low ROEs now on offer. Some firms trade at below their book value (see chart), implying they cannot deliver acceptable returns to their owners.

Unionized Government Workers Paid 30 Percent More Than Private Sector
From The Wall Street Journal, "The Public Worker Gravy Train: Many government employees are paid up to 30% more than those in the private sector." by Andrew Biggs and Jason Richwine
Overall, our research suggests that government workers in California are compensated up to 30% more generously than are similar employees in large private firms. And the California experience is similar to that of other large states with powerful public unions. Elected officials are right to reassess public worker compensation as they try to close their budget deficits.Read the complete article here.
More Research Finds Tax Increases Cause GDP Declines
From "The Effects of Tax Shocks on Output: Not so Large, But Not Small Either" by Roberto Perotti, February 2011:
typically, a one percentage point of GDP increase in taxes leads to a decline in GDP by about 1.5 percentage points after 3 years.
John List, Economist Who Uses Randomized Controlled Field Experiments Instead Of Mathematical Models
An excellent article about economics professor John List who believes in testing economic and social ideas with randomized controlled study field experiments instead of computer models and lab experiments.
From Bloomberg, "Chicago Economist's `Crazy' Education Idea Wins Ken Griffin's Backing" by Oliver Staley:
From Bloomberg, "Chicago Economist's `Crazy' Education Idea Wins Ken Griffin's Backing" by Oliver Staley:
The Griffin experiment may show that the U.S. doesn’t spend enough on helping parents, List says. “We have too many eggs in the kid basket,” says List, himself a father of five. “We need to spend much more time and many more resources on helping parents.”Read the complete article here.*** List knew where he could experiment with real decisions about prices: at sports-card trade shows, which he attended as a collector of baseball and football memorabilia. In one experiment, aimed at finding out why people in business transactions treat each other fairly, List had card buyers ask dealers for a card of Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas in mint condition.
He found that when dealers didn’t think they were being watched and they knew the buyer couldn’t check the quality, they gave unfair prices, to a degree that rose with the dealers’ distance from their home markets.*** In a later experiment, List and two colleagues posted an ad for an administrative job on Craigslist in 16 cities. About 7,000 job seekers responded and were then given different compensation plans. Some were offered a flat hourly rate while others had to compete for their money.
In general, women shied away from competition, although they were more likely to compete when they operated in teams and when they could earn more than the prevailing wages in their region, the research found. The study helps explain why there are relatively few women executives in fields where promotion is based on competition, List says.
“An important component of gender imbalance is compensation structure,” he says. “If you had a different type of compensation regime, the composition of the top echelon of workers would be different.”
